Redwood Freshmen topped rival Tamalpais in a close contest at Endriss Field 4-2.
Redwood jumped on top in the first with two runs. Matt Birchenough led things off with a single and Jack Van Hooser advanced him to second with a sacrifice bunt. Jesse Gassman then doubled driving in Birchenough. Nick Welch followed with a run scoring single to complete the scoring and giving Redwood a 2-0 lead.
Tamalpais managed to get a run back in the top of the 3rd but Redwood came right back scoring in the bottom of the frame. After Jesse Gassman was hit by a pitch Nick Welch came up and delivered a run scoring double making it 3-1.
In the top of the fifth inning Tam made it a one run game again scoring once to make it 3-2. It stayed that way until the bottom of the sixth. Nick Welch led off the inning with a line drive single to center. Alex Hagen then ripped a double to right field with Welch coming all the way around to score. That would complete the scoring for the game and provide Redwood with the final 4-2 margin.
Nick Welch started for Redwood and went four innings striking out nine Tam hitters and pocketing the win. Matthew Smallbach pitched the final 2 ⅓ while adding five K’s of his own while picking up the save.
This was a well played game with both teams playing error free baseball. The win brings Redwood’s record to 8-4 overall and 4-1 in league action.
