Redwood Frosh top Novato 12-2

The Giants sent 12 men to the plate in the first inning and jumped on top 6-1 on their way to a 5-inning win over the visiting Hornets.

Lucas Roy started for Redwood and went three innings striking out three and allowing two runs with only one of those being earned.  Matthew Smallbach finished up pitching two innings while striking out three of his own without giving up a hit.

Aaron Kim got things started in the first with a lead off single and then stole second base with Jackson Reed at the plate.  Reed then singled in Kim to make it 1-1.  Reed took off on the first pitch completing another steal and Yu then drove him in with the third straight hit to start the game.  Nick Welch made it four in a row and once again a steal of second set up the RBI with Yu scoring on the hit.  Jack Van Hooser then walked and with one out and Sander Leszczynski did the same loading the bases. Zach Bjursten delivered another hit for the Giants with Welch scoring on the play and making it 4-1 Redwood with the bases still loaded.  Drake Goodman was hit by an errant pitch driving in Van Hooser to stretch the lead to 5-1.  The scoring was completed when Aaron Kim hit the sixth single of the inning with Leszczynski scoring to increase the lead to 6-1.

Novato pushed another run across in the top of the third to cut the lead to 6-2.  In the bottom of the fourth Redwood struck again with Yu getting another hit followed by an error that put runners on first and third.  Van Hooser drove in Yu with an RBI single with Willie Sine advancing to third bringing Redwood’s lead back to five runs.  Leszczynski would make it 8-2 Redwood with an RBI groundout to second that brought Sine in to score.  After Bjursten was hit by a pitch and took second on defensive indifference, Drake Goodman brought both Van Hooser and Bjursten in with a two out two-run single making it 10-2 Giants after four.

Redwood would wrap things up by scoring twice in the bottom of the fifth which triggered the 10-run rule and ended the game.  Reed singled to start the inning and Yu walked. Reed advanced to third on a passed ball and then scored when Sine grounded out.  The game was over after Issak Kreft delivered Redwood’s 13th hit of the game with Yu crossing the plate with the winning run and 12-2 final.
