Redwood Freshmen hold off Cardinal Newman 4-3

Redwood took a 4-0 lead into the fifth inning and then held on for the win as they watched Cardinal Newman score single runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings at Endriss Field.

Jesse Gassman started for the Giants and went five strong innings giving up just one run while striking out five.  Matt Birchenough finished up for Redwood notching the save.

Birchenough also reached base safely in all four at bats with three walks and a single while scoring twice and adding four stolen bases for the day. He led off the first with a single to center and after stealing both second and third, Jonathan Yu drove him in with a one out sacrifice fly making it 1-0 Redwood after one.  The Giants got back to work in the third with Birchenough again leading off and this time drawing a walk.  After a swipe of second he came around to score on a single by Jesse Gassman.  Gassman would also steal both second and third putting him in position to score on an RBI groundout by Yu for a 3-0 lead.

The Giants completed their scoring in the fourth when Jake Gassman led off with a single to left and soon advanced to second on a balk. With one out, both Satoshi Miki and Birchenough walked loading the bases.  Jesse Gassman again helped his own cause by driving in Jake Gassman on a groundout making it 4-0 Redwood.

Then Redwood held on through the last three innings taking the non-league win 4-3 against a tough Cardinal Newman squad.
