Nick Welch throws no-hitter and Redwood freshmen top San Marin 6-0 in MCAL opener

Welch was dominant from start to finish issuing just one walk and striking out 10 including striking out the side in the last inning.  He benefited from strong defense behind him with Redwood playing error free baseball.  Welch needed only 70 pitches in his seven inning gem and threw 54 of those for strikes (77%).

The Redwood offense provided all the run support needed by scoring a run in the first inning without the benefit of a hit.  Jesse Gassman and Jonathan Yu both walked and then later in the inning with Yu on first and Gassman on third they executed a double steal with Gassman crossing the plate.

Redwood added to the lead in the third when Jesse Gassman opened it with a single. Yu was then hit by a pitch putting runners on first and second.  Once again they executed a double steal and Gassman came in to score on the catcher’s throwing error making it 2-0 Redwood.

Matt Birchenough scored a run in the 4th inning on an RBI groundout by Satoshi Miki.  Birchenough was in position to score after stealing both second and third.

Redwood would score three more in the 6th inning for the 6-0 final.  The runs came about as a result of RBI singles by Birchenough and Yu and a sac fly by Cameron Gregory.

The win moves Redwood to 6-2 for the season and 1-0 in MCAL league play.
