Spring break is considered the halfway point for Redwood baseball and the last week before the boys go on break. Tonight, the Giants played their cross-creek rivals, Marin Catholic, and joined their varsity teammates in victory, by shutting out the Wildcats 4-0. Kyle Felder started for the Giants, going four strong shutout innings, striking out four and conceding no runs.
The Giants got things started in the bottom of the second after starting pitcher, Kyle Felder, was hit by a pitch. After, second baseman, Nick Cook, singled to right field, advancing Felder to second base. Haiden Jones laid down an effective sacrifice bunt, moving Felder and Cook into scoring position. Jake Nordstrom then singled to right, scoring Felder and Cook (2-0, Redwood).
Redwood continued to manufacture runs in the third inning with Jackson Barry driving the ball to left field for a lead-off single. Jack Morken would get hit by a pitch, putting runners at first and second. Kyle Felder then laid down a perfect punt along the first base line, loading the bases. After two fielder’s choice outs, Jake Nordstrom came through with a shot to left field, scoring Morken and Felder. Jones would be tagged out at third to end the scoring (4-0, Redwood).
The Wildcats showed promise in the 5th and 6th innings but for two important plays. In the fifth, Jacob Klionsky would take a short hop at center field and gun down the MC runner at home. Catcher, Jake Nordstrom, would also throw out two steal attempts at second during the contest, keeping MC off the board.
The Giants relied on Jackson Bender in the sixth and seventh innings to close out the game. Bender showed some big confidence and characteristic swagger, shutting out his opponents with twenty-four pitches of two-hit work. In the bottom of the seventh, the Giants bought in Maxim Kawashima to close out the game in style.
Undeniably, Jake Nordstrom was the man of the match today. Jake gunned down two fast runners at second base, tagged out the potential rally starting run at home and delivered two big hits. All of Redwoods runs came off of Nordstrom’s bat-giving him the Man of the Match honors. Final Score: 4-0, Giants!
Redwood will travel to Drake High School on Thursday, April 6th, where they will seek to take over first place in the MCAL standings. First pitch-4:30 p.m.
