After 8 players earned spots on the IJ’s All-MCAL team the accolades continued as the Redwood Varsity Giants earned their highest ranking since the 1977 team was ranked #1 in the Nation. After winning the DII NCS Title earning #1 rank in that classification, MaxPreps ranked Redwood #4 in the State, #6 in the West Region, #3 in the Nation for ‘Medium Schools’ and #21 in the Nation.
After Justin Sienna, Drake and Branson won their respective Division Championships, MaxPreps surely recognized what the Giants accomplished this year. “With MCAL teams winning 4 out of the 5 division championships, it shows the strength of our league overall and it really shows the strength of our team.”, Firenzi said. The Giants were 2-0 against Justin and Drake and 3-0 against Branson. 7-0 vs. NCS Division Champions. When asked how he felt about the final rankings, Firenzi said, “I’m happy for the seniors…to go out with a title, I’m happy for the school and community, and I’m very happy for the Redwood Baseball Program and what the future holds”.
The 2014 Giants ended their season with a 14-11 record and were knocked out in the first round of the MCAL Playoffs. In his first year as Head Coach, Firenzi led the Giants to a 27-3 record, ably assisted by Rich Epidendio, Tim Grayson and Joel Russo. Firenzi was also named NCS DII ‘Coach of the Year’ by the North Coast Section. “I feel honored to the recognized but a coach is only as good as his players execution and the assistants around him. I think each coach we had brought something different to the table to make a well-rounded staff. I feel very fortunate to have three men willing to sacrifice so much of their time for the kids and the program”, Firenzi said modestly. “2015 will be a year we all remember, but my sights are set on 2016.”
