Frosh Giants Win Pitchers’ Duel Against Marin Catholic

5/2:  The frosh Giants pushed across a single run late to defeat a game Marin Catholic squad by a score of 1-0 on Wednesday afternoon at Endriss Field.

Jake Zesiger started on the mound for the Giants and held MC scoreless through five innings.  He was matched zero for zero by MC lefty Van Larson, who worked out of a few jams to keep Redwood off the board through the Giants’ first four at-bats.

In the bottom of the fifth, Bodie Jehling led off with a single to left and Charlie Ginsburg laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance him to second.  After taking third on a wild pitch, Jehling scored on Ben Cohen’s sacrifice fly to center, and through five innings Redwood was up 1-0.

A terrific game took a dark turn in the top of the sixth when Zesiger suffered what all in attendance could see was a serious arm injury while throwing a pitch to MC’s first batter of the inning.  X-rays would later reveal a complete fracture of the humerus bone in Zesiger’s throwing arm.  It was a sad ending to a great season for Zesiger.

Mikey Bender was summoned in relief and preserved the win for Zesiger, holding the Wildcats scoreless for the final two innings.  Zesiger and Bender together held MC to only one hit on the afternoon.

Redwood’s record for the season now stands at 19-1.  Next game for the frosh is on Saturday morning against Novato – first pitch 11:00 AM at Endriss Field.
