4/4: The frosh Giants improved their record to 9-1 with a 6-1 victory at Novato.
Jake Zesiger started for the Giants and held Novato to one run over his four innings. The Giants scored single runs in the second, third and fourth innings on an RBI single by Jack Watson, an RBI triple by Mikey Bender and an RBI single by Ethan Crawford.
The Giants got strong outfield defense from Ben Cohen and Thomas Johnson, each of whom covered serious outfield real estate to make tough running catches in center and right.
The Giants added two runs in the top of the fifth to make the score 5-1. Bodie Jehling drove in the first run with an RBI single. With Bender on third and Jehling on first, Jehling took off for second before the Novato pitcher came home, getting himself into a rundown. While the Novato infield was distracted by Jehling, Bender raced home from third with the fifth run of the game for the Giants.
Zane Kempler relieved Zesiger in the bottom of the fifth and pitched flawlessly, giving up only one hit over the final three innings while striking out three.
The Giants added their final run in the top of the sixth, with Bender driving Kempler home on a single to center. Bender led the Giants offensively on the day, going three for three with a walk to boot.
The frosh are off until next Friday, April 13. On that date they play Campolindo in Moraga at 4:00 PM. The next evening, Saturday, April 14, the Giants will take on San Rafael under the lights at Albert Park (first pitch 6:30 PM).
