Freshmen take early lead and hold on over San Rafael 5-3

Redwood evened its MCAL record with San Rafael at 1-1 with a 5-3 win at San Rafael High.  The Giants went in front in the first inning as Matt Birchenough was hit by the third pitch of the game and then proceeded to steal both second and third.  Jonathan Yu then delivered the game’s first run with an RBI single to center making it 1-0 Redwood.

After a scoreless second inning Birchenough drew a one out walk in the third and then took second on a steal.  Jesse Gassman then drove a 1-1 pitch into the gap in left for a double scoring Birchenough. Jonathan Yu singled putting runners at first and third.  Redwood then executed once again this season on a double steal with Gassman crossing the plate and increasing the lead to 3-0.

San Rafael closed the gap to 3-2 with a two out two run double in the bottom of the fourth.  The Giants would battle back in the following inning when Birchenough hit a one out double and then Jesse Gassman walked.  With two down, Redwood executed another double steal with Birchenough scoring his third run of the afternoon to increase the lead to 4-2.

San Rafael would not go down easy though as they scored again in the bottom of the fifth making it a one run game.

It would stay 4-3 until the top of the seventh.  After receiving the gift of two errors and two subsequent baserunners to start the inning, the Giants would bank one more run when Birchenough grounded out scoring Matthew Smallbach on the play for the 5-3 final score.

Nick Welch would end the drama by striking out the side in the bottom of the seventh and picking up the save and pitching the last three innings in relief of Jesse Gassman who started and went four getting the win.  The two pitchers combined struck out 11 Bulldogs while issuing only one walk and giving up five hits.
