The freshman Giants game versus San Marin on Saturday was halted due to rain after four innings with the Mustangs leading 1-0. The entire game was played through rain showers that ultimately led to the game being called. As by rule a minimum of five innings are required for a game to be official (or 4½ if the home team is winning), the game will be played at a later date. At this time it is unclear if the makeup date will be a resumption of Saturday’s game in the top of the fifth inning with San Marin up 1-0 or if instead the teams will start over and play a full seven inning game.
After having their previous two games postponed by rain, on Saturday morning it initially appeared that there was going to be a break in the weather sufficient to get the game in. However, just about simultaneously with first pitch the rain showers began and though sunny skies were visible in seemingly every direction, the rain clouds hung over Moody Field for the entirety of the game.
Mikey Bender pitched all four innings for the Giants, surrendering a single run in the first inning when San Marin scored on a wild pitch. Bender struck out five in his four innings of work and provided a solid effort in difficult conditions.
Despite threatening to score in multiple innings, the Giants were unable to get the key hits necessary to push any runs across. Zack Chilson pitched all four innings for the Mustangs, striking out three.
J.T. Dyer went two for two at the plate for the Giants with a pair of line drive singles.
This coming week is a busy one for the frosh, with games on Monday (Tam – 4:30 PM at Endriss), Tuesday (Terra Linda – 4:30 PM at Endriss), Wednesday (Campolindo – 4:30 PM in Moraga) and Friday (San Rafael – 4:30 PM at Endriss). The Terra Linda game is a makeup of the game that was originally scheduled for March 14 but was postponed by rain.
