Freshman Defeat Campolindo 2-0

Redwood Freshmen recorded their second shutout of the season defeating Campolindo 2-0 on Thursday, improving their season record to 3-1.

Nick Welch and Alex Hagen combined to pitch a one hit shutout with Welch picking up the win, pitching four innings and striking out six. Hagen got the save working the final three, finishing it off by striking out the side in the final inning.

Redwood got on the board in the first when Drake Goodman walked, advanced to second on a passed ball and scored on a groundout RBI by Jonathan Yu.

With 2 out in the 6th Lucas Roy got a clutch hit driving in Goodman for an important insurance run.

Strong defense was a plus for Redwood with no errors committed while Campolindo made five errors.  In the 5th inning with a Campolindo runner in scoring position, Matt Birchenough, backing up first base, made a throw from right field to catcher Jake Gassman who tagged out the sliding Campolindo runner at the plate to complete an unlikely double play. Gassman also threw out two runners attempting to steal and picked off a runner at first giving him three assists for the game.
