Firenzi Just 9 Wins Away From 400 Wins

4/20:  Redwood Head Coach Mike Firenzi Celebrated his 51st birthday today getting his team ready to face the Drake Pirates tomorrow.  Firenzi has never been one who enjoys the spotlight and typically will defer to his players and assistants when asked about his teams’ success.  But on your birthday, it’s hard to hide.  The Giants ended their practice session singing on off-key and near-pathetic rendition of the “Happy Birthday Song”.  What many people don’t know is that Firenzi could reach 400 wins this season.

In his typical modest fashion, Firenzi has only mentioned the 400 win plateau once to his team on a sunny warm day in February right after the team was selected.  “We have a chance to get to 400 wins this year.  There is only one other coach who has ever coached at Redwood who has done that, and he’s a darn good one”.  That coach happens to be his mentor, Al Endriss..

Firenzi ended the 2015 campaign with 380 wins in his coaching career, the bulk of his victories coming from his years coaching at Marin Catholic where he started as a young man in his early 20’s.  “I go to the MCAL coaches meeting and I’m the old man in the room now.”, Firenzi said at the beginning of the season.  I look around the room and the guys I’m coaching with are guys that were players when I was coaching.”

“I don’t think about it much, I think more about what we need to do to get ready and be better every day, but I have to admit, it will be pretty cool if we get there.”

Cool indeed, with just nine wins to go, the countdown begins.
